Where to First Begin Wedding Planning

It’s very common for brides to get overwhelmed when starting to plan their weddings. There’s so much to coordinate, where do you even start? If you’re wondering where to begin in the planning process, start by deciding what matters the most to you.

Key Factor

Before you can schedule any vendors, you will need to have a date and venue picked. Once you have that, schedule a time to sit down with your partner and decide what matters the most to you both on your big day. Is it photography, food, drinks, dancing, or the ceremony itself? Each of you pick the MOST important factor of the day and start with that thing.

If it’s photography, start looking at different photographers in your area and pick your favorites and reach out to them. Decide which photo styles and poses you really like and save those in an idea book or Pinterest board.

If your biggest factor is the food, start brainstorming foods you’d like to incorporate and decide which dinner style you’d like to have for guests. Reach out to caterers in your area and get the ball rolling. If you’re a creative and you need to do something artsy, design menu cards to be finalized later.

If you’re both focused on a fun night of dancing with friends for hours, check out local bands or DJs in your area and begin there. Don’t forget to brainstorm dance floor props you’d like to have if your budget allows. Some common ones are glow wands for the dance floor, fun sunglasses, plastic cowboy hats, or glow sticks or necklaces. Whatever you decide, have fun with it and make it yours.

Gain Momentum

It doesn’t matter what your biggest factor is, but decide on a place to start and get the ball rolling on that thing. It will make you feel like you’re getting things accomplished without feeling overwhelmed and just like that, you’ve started planning! As things fall into place such as your catering, it will lead into other things to plan such as your rentals and décor items and the bar.

Planning one step at a time is totally normal. If you feel overwhelmed with where to begin or you’re not great at making decisions quickly, set your date for further out to give yourself plenty of time to plan each detail without feeling rushed or overwhelmed. If you need a two-year engagement to get everything done on your own time, that is totally fine! Do things at your own pace. It’s important to still maintain a balance with your work, social life, and everything else going on in your life. It’s not realistic to drop everything else and only think about wedding stuff for the next 6 months or more. Make sure you’re also carving out time to just be a couple and not walk about wedding stuff!
