How to Make Your Wedding Unique

Think of your wedding as an experience for your guests. How can you make that experience nicer or more fun for them? What would you like to share with them? How can you share your story in a unique way with them? Create a memorable, unique wedding experience for guests with these options.

Color

Bold, fun color is a big trend right now and I am LOVING it! I’ve always been a sucker for cheery pinks and blues and greens. You can show a lot of personality through color without it looking cheesy. It’s important to find the style or vibe you’re going for and add as much color as you’re comfortable with. Maybe it’s a small pop of color among neutrals, or maybe you love a bold, summery color palette. Choose what you love, not what’s trendy right now if it’s not your thing. You want to look back at your photos in 20 years and be happy with your decisions.

Florals

Choose décor that reflects your style. If you’re not into flowers, stick to candles and greenery instead. Or perhaps you like succulents or pampas grasses more than a floral arrangement. Choose décor that reflects you and complements your venue space. I’ve seen some amazing events with palm leaves and fruit instead of flowers. Don’t get sucked into a traditional look if that’s not what you want. And trust me, your vendors will be thrilled to see something new and make something different!

Attire

I’m so glad we’re in the age now of creative wedding attire and couples getting to choose what they want to wear! We’re seeing amazing pantsuits and colored wedding dresses pop up everywhere. Be as creative here as you’re comfortable with. Maybe you want the groomsmen to wear dark green or orange suits instead of black or navy. Go for it! If you want to wear a colorful floral dress instead of a traditional white gown, be my guest! This is your big day, make it truly yours. Couples are also asking all guests to wear shades of a specific color to pop in their wedding photos. All black attire looks great for formal weddings!

Traditions

I think it’s so important to include cultural traditions in your wedding and celebrate your heritage. This is also a great time to share that culture with those around you. This can be special attire, cultural music or dances, special instruments, or specific food. The most memorable events are those where guests have a good time and try something new.

Food

Speaking of food, this is a great place to include cultural traditions or items unique to you. Even if you’re choosing a more standard menu, you should definitely include elements that you love. Add your favorite food items to the appetizer or dinner menu. Make your food fun by having a taco bar, pizzas, or a sundae bar, or have food trucks instead of a buffet. Even having a family style dinner instead of a buffet is unique and adds a family vibe to your dinner. Throw out the rules you’ve seen everywhere else and imagine what you would love and create your unique wedding.

Dessert

The same goes for your dessert. You’re not required to have cake at your wedding. Offer cookies, cupcakes, macarons, donuts, cannoli’s, fortune cookies, or s’mores instead. If you have a favorite food, make sure you include it and share it with your guests. If you or your family is ‘known’ for something, share it. I’ve had several events where they had homemade pies or cheesecakes and everyone loved them!

Entertainment

The sky’s the limit these days with unique entertainment. You can have a whimsical band that wears costumes and engages the audience. Or you can have a DJ play your favorite music that you love. You can include songs that guests love to sing along to such as Sweet Caroline or The Spice Girls. There are live painters who paint your reception right there in front of everyone. You can hire an impersonator of your favorite celebrity. You can have acrobats, firebreathers, and dancers if you’d like. There are no limits here.

The point here is that now you have the perfect opportunity to create a memorable event that’s unique to you and tells your special story. Let the creativity begin!
